The first step for the repair or rebuilding project is to remove the old chimney, if necessary, and replace it with a new one. This process is done by first removing the bricks all the way down to the bottom of the chimney. Then all existing mortar should be removed and washed away. Because the old mortar is not suitable for use in a new chimney, it has to be removed before laying down a new layer of mortar, which will hold the bricks together in place once they are back up on top of each other. Once this step has been completed, new bricks should be added until they reach the top of the chimney’s structure.

The process of adding a new cap along with a crown can also be done during such a project. This involves placing concrete around older stones, and then inserting steel rods inside them that are linked together with wire mesh.
